Did you know that perceived stress (what we think may or may not happen, how we imagine the future might be, and even our perception of how others may or may not view us) can be just as harmful to our health as stressful events that have actually taken place?
Last Friday I got a notice via my USPS emails that I had a package arriving Monday from the IRS.
This struck a chord of fear in me, even though we always pay our taxes and have an incredible accountant to does them for us.
I thought to myself, "Now what, are we being audited?"
I let that thought permeate and pretty much ruin my entire weekend.
I didn't even truly know what was in the package, only that it was arriving.
Perhaps it was even good news, but that's not where my mind went.
By Monday I had allowed this perceived stress to really weigh me down.
Turns out that the big envelope was from the IRS, but it was for the person who lived in the house before us.
It WASN'T EVEN FOR US, but I had let it ruin my entire weekend.
It made me think about how much we let something that's not even real, that we don't have all the facts for, that may or may not actually even happen STRESS US OUT.
How often do we project our fears into the future and let that stress us out and destroy our present?
How often do we allow our perception of what's going on around us steal our joy and peace only to find out later it wasn't even a thing.
It was a huge reminder that if I'm living in past stress, or worrying about the future, I'm not taking full advantage of my life in the present.
Because in reality this very moment is all we have at any given time.
We cannot redo the past.
We cannot know the future.
All we can truly do is be grateful for the very seconds we are living in the present.
When our focus is taken away from the present by stress (real or perceived), it's stealing the only time we actually have control over.
Don't allow your mind to steal your joy and peace with perceived stress my friends!!!
It's not worth your mental and physical health.
Stay present in the here and now.
Throw gratitude around like it's candy on Halloween.
Be mindful of the voice in your head that takes you down perceived stress rabbit trails and tell it to shut the heck up. ... See MoreSee Less

I had a major mindset shift a few days ago.
I haven't made the best choices, because...STRESS.
I have to admit it. For the past few months I've been feeling and acting like a victim.
A victim of 2020.
A victim of my health issues.
A victim of my anxiety.
A victim of financial stress due to COVID19.
A victim of schedule disruption and loss of time now that I'm homeschooling.
A victim of my own lack of motivation.
All of these things I felt were HAPPENING TO ME.
But a couple of days ago I had a heart to heart with myself. With my ego. With my lack of power. With my hopelessness. With my overwhelm.
I used to face any problem head on with confidence and strength.
Somewhere over the last few years since my traumatic pregnancy/birth of Daniel I lost that.
I lost my power.
A couple of days ago I decided to take my power back.
There are SO many things right now that are 100% out of my control. COVID, the election, school options, being able to spend time certain people I love...
But there are infinitely more things that ARE within my control that make a huge difference in my mental health.
Getting to bed early or on time.
Getting up before the kids to work, workout, or just be before the "momming" starts.
Scheduling my life in a way that helps me to win. I've switched some things around in my personal and work schedule to give myself some buffer. Being overscheduled is a major anxiety trigger for me.
Working out daily, even if it just means going for a walk.
Dialing in my nutrition to best support my mental and physical health.
Turning off social media and the news and turning inward and to God.
Scheduling precious time with friends.
Going on an adventure of some sort each week with the kids.
And focusing on my family, friends and loved ones.
I'm taking my power back.
I am NOT a victim of this crazy world or circumstance.
I can choose peace, joy and simplicity.
I'm taking my power back and it feels so damned good.
